Chasnoff grew up in a secular Jewish family in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C. (). She attended Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where she studied economics ()(). For a brief time after college Chasnoff worked as a telecommunications rate analyst representing clients with roles in the nuclear weapons industry (). Chasnoff quit this profession because her job was not in line with her social activism beliefs and aspirations, and began her career as a social activist and media producer (). Kim Klausner is the co-parent of Chasnoff’s two sons Noah Klausner Chasnoff, born in 1988, and Oscar Chasnoff Klausner, born in 1994 ()(). Chasnoff is currently married to Nancy Otto who works as a glass blowing artist and a non-profit fundraising consultant (). Together, they have a chocolate Labrador named Molé.
